The "Fake Artists" Phenomenon on Spotify

Well, hello! Have you heard the latest buzz in the streaming universe? Let's dive deep into this, understand its implications, and figure out how “real artists” can navigate these waters while staying true to our art.

What is a "Fake Artist"?

Imagine scrolling through your favorite mood-focused playlists on Spotify, vibing to the tunes that fit your current mood. But here's the twist—some of these tracks aren't from the artists you think they are. Instead, they're created by real composers who use pseudonyms to release music anonymously.

Back in 2017 when MBW broke the news that Spotify was repeatedly adding ‘fake artists’ to its key playlists, we also revealed the source behind a swathe of these fictitious performers was Stockholm-based production music company, Epidemic Sound.

This phenomenon isn't just a quirky trivia fact; it's reshaping the music streaming landscape in ways that affect all artists—🌟 Why? Because these dudes are grabbing a serious share of the streaming pie— surpassing mega-artists like Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson in streams.

The “fake artists” debate was reignited in 2022 when Swedish newspaper, Dagens Nyheter (DN), ran an expose (available here) on Sweden-based indie label Firefly Entertainment, and how it makes its money by releasing music by lots of fake artists.

DN reported to have obtained a list of 830 ‘fake artist’ names linked to Firefly, and discovered that at least 495 of these artists had music on first-party Spotify playlists.

The Impact on Discovery and Monetization

For emerging artists, the current trend is akin to attempting to make oneself heard during a massive concert without a microphone. With a deluge of anonymous content, it becomes a Herculean challenge to stand out and get your music into the hearts of listeners. And let's not forget about monetization - earning money from music in this crowded space is akin to locating a needle in a digital haystack. 💰

On Tuesday (March 19), Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter published an expose on Spotify’s fake artist problem (not the newspaper’s first on that topic), and reports to have identified the musician “behind the world’s most listened to network of fake artists on Spotify.”

DN reports that this individual is a composer from Sweden named Johan Röhr, whose music, it says, has been released on Spotify under “50 composer aliases and at least 656 invented artist names”.

On the flip side, established artists face a dilemma. How do they maintain their authenticity while navigating the commercial strategies that dominate these platforms?

It's a balancing act between staying true to one's artistic voice and playing the game to stay relevant and profitable.

Oh yeah, and also, if you missed it, there was also this gem this week:

A Danish man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for using fake accounts and bot-generated streams to defraud streaming services of 2 million kroner ($290,000 USD) in royalties.

Fake streams dilute the royalty pool and lower payments to legitimate artists.

In one week alone, the defendant “played” 244 tracks 5.5 million times, with 20 accounts responsible for most of the streams. According to the Danish Rights Alliance, he had 69 accounts with music streaming services, including 20 with Spotify. At one point, his fake streams made him the 46th highest-earning musician in Denmark.

Thriving in the Digital Era

So, what's a musician to do in the face of these challenges? First off, don't panic! The digital world is ever-evolving, and with change comes opportunity. Here are some tips to help you thrive:

1. Embrace Authenticity: In a world of masks, being yourself is your superpower. Authenticity resonates with audiences, so let your true voice shine through your music.

2. Innovate and Experiment: This shift is a catalyst to try new things. Experiment with genres, collaborate across boundaries and explore new distribution channels. Your next big break could be just one innovation away!

3. Build Your Community: Connect with your fans beyond just streaming. Engage with them on social media, live gigs, or through unique online experiences. Remember, your supporters are your strongest advocates in the digital jungle.

4. Stay Informed and Adapt: Keep your finger on the pulse of the industry. Understanding the trends and adapting your strategy allows you to navigate the digital landscape with confidence and flair.

The rise of "fake artists" on Spotify is more than just a trend; it reflects the broader shifts in how music is created, consumed, and monetized in the digital age. As artists, our journey is balancing staying true to our craft and adapting to the evolving marketplace.

Music is about expression, innovation, and connection—and no trend can change that core melody that beats in the heart of every musician. Artists have been asking the same question since the beginning of the music industry: Will I get paid for my work?
