Maximizing Small Spaces: Creative Home Studio Setups That Work
The first incarnation of RPMusic Studios was in the corner of a room in a house Sean had rented with a roommate. It then expanded to our bedroom in an apartment in Philly that we lived in together. Then, we went to the basement of a house we rented in the city. Then, we went to a house where we divided and reserved half for a separate recording studio. The point is that everyone has to start somewhere. Let's see how you can transform that small corner or unused space into a productive hub for your audio projects.
1. Embrace Compact Gear
When working with limited space, your choice of equipment is crucial. Go for compact and multi-functional gear. A small audio interface like the UA Volt 2 is a great start. It's petite, provides excellent sound quality, and won't take up much desk space. Pair this with a set of nearfield monitors like the KRK Rokit 5s, which are perfect for small rooms.
2. Utilize Vertical Space
Think upwards! Utilize wall space for storage and acoustic treatment. Wall-mounted shelves can hold your MIDI controllers or mics when not in use. Consider acoustic foam panels like Auralex Acoustics Studiofoam Wedges to treat your walls and manage sound reflections without sacrificing floor space.
3. Opt for a Space-Saving Desk
OMG desks. Sean has literally spent the equivalent of days of his life researching desks. Actually, right now in the studio, we have 3 desks that have been repurposed because they didn’t do what we wanted. Your desk is your command center. It offers enough surface area for your essentials while including rack spaces for some outboard gear or a small MIDI keyboard.

If you're really pressed for space, remember that your laptop is a powerful tool. Mobile digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Apple’s GarageBand or FL Studio Mobile can turn any corner of your home into a temporary studio.
9. Foldable Isolation Booths

10. Lighting and Ambiance
Never underestimate the power of good lighting and a pleasant ambiance. Soft, warm lights or LED strips can create an inspiring atmosphere, helping you stay creative and focused. Just be careful, some older lightning can cause electrical interference and add noise to your tracks.
